Anna Hall was elected the new Student Government Association president, and Percy Marchand will be the new vice president, according to Wednesday’s runoff election results. Both outcomes were tight, with less than 20 votes deciding both races. Haill, music business junior, garnered 417 votes, andwhile Nathan Gaudet, history junior, received 400. Marchand, management junior, won his position with 414 votes, defeating over Caryn Winters, political science sophomore, who received 395.Marchand credited clean campaigns and a lack of negativity with good voter turnout. He said that turnout could always be better but was higher than expected.”The Loyola community showed their appreciation by turning out in high numbers to vote again,” Marchand said. “It shows student concern and support for the administration.”Hall said she was also impressed with this year’s voting response.”Voter turnout was amazing, and it says a lot about this year’s SGA,” she said. She said she enjoyed sitting in on different organizations’ meetings during her campaign because it allowed her to meet more students that way. Hall said she believed her plans to fix large problems with smaller solutions and student trust in her lead to her success. Marchand said he thought his campaign was successful because he laid out how he could make things happen, instead of just making blanket promises. Both winners said that they are ready to get to work and have started meeting with the current president and vice president, Mary Flynn and Lauren Campisi. Hall said she is working with Flynn to get the “Safe Ride” project off the ground. The program would allow Loyola students to use Tulane University’s shuttle service, which makes numerous nighttime stops at Uptown and Downtown locations.Marchand said he’s glad campaigning is over and that he’s ready to get to work. He has already met with Campisi to begin the transition period in order to continue the progress the current administration has already made, he said. His first order of business will be to organize Congress and make sure the new members know their responsibilities.Marchand also said he is excited about putting his printing business on the side and looks forward to focusing all his attention on the Loyola community.”I’m ready for action,” he said.Hall said there’s still a lot to get done in the time remaining this year before turning her attention to next semester, and she’s looking forward to a longer-than-usual transition period. Two additional races were decided in this week’s runoff. Janel Glynn, general studies junior, secured the fourth congressperson at large seat over Rachel-Rose Rohatgi, drama sophomore. Glynn, general studies junior, won with 527 votes to Rohatgi’s 269.Bobby Hjortsberg, psychology pre-med sophomore, will be the new College of Arts & Sciences president. Hjortsberg won the race with 291 votes, defeating Chris Gabler, biology pre-med freshman, who received 246.City College and music seats remain open, and applications for those positions will be accepted after the new Congress takes office. New members will be sworn in on April 2.
