Anthony DiMaggio III, a professor at Loyola for 38 years, died at 67 on Sept. 24 at Colonial Oaks Nursing Home.
DiMaggio was born in New Orleans, graduated from Loyola University, and earned a doctorate in biochemistry from Louisiana State University Medical School.
For 30 of the 38 years DiMaggio taught at Loyola, he was the chairman of the chemistry department.
According to Mary Beth Forsyth, chemistry administrative assistant, DiMaggio is remembered as a man with “a great affection for Loyola.”
She explained that DiMaggio attended Loyola as an undergrad, left to pursue his Ph.D and immediately returned to Loyola.
“He never left. Loyola was so much a part of his life, aside from it being his job. He really loved Loyola.” she said.
Forsyth added that DiMaggio had part of his salary taken out and donated back to the chemistry department.
DiMaggio was a member of Alpha Delta Gamma Fraternity, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association of University Professors.
In addition to singing with the New Orleans Symphony Chorus and directing a summer institute for high school science teachers, he was on the board of the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair and the Louisiana State Science Olympiad.
DiMaggio’s survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter, a sister and two grandchildren.
