Christine Mainguy is a hustler. She fills the stat sheet on a game by game basis collecting points and rebounds in bunches for the Lady Wolfpack.
Mainguy, management senior, was introduced to basketball by her older brother, who practiced with her after school.
In high school, the Houston native played point guard and shooting guard, but during Mainguy’s career with the Woflpack she has moved to center. This was a big change for Mainguy.
“I wasn’t used to having my back facing the goal,” Mainguy said.
She is one of the tallest players on the team, which made the transition easier.
“I like to rebound, I like to hustle,” Mainguy said.
Over the summer the Lady Wolfpack changed head coaches. It was a hard change for Mainguy because she was used to playing under Dobee Plaisance’s coaching style.
“After four years of getting used to a system it’s hard to change. Kellie (Kennedy) has been really patient with us,” said Mainguy.
Mainguy and her teammates were supportive of Plaisance’s leaving Loyola for Nicholls State University, a Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association school.
“We talked to Dobee (Plaisance) and told her she should move on. I had one year left, but this is her career,” Mainguy said.
The bond between Mainguy and her teammates is undeniable.
“Someone asked me the other day if I have friends that aren’t from basketball. It took me a while to think of one,” Mainguy said.
When she was looking at schools to attend after high school, Mainuy had several options to choose from.
She decided Loyola was the best choice for her because she believed Loyola had the complete package. With its small size, competitive athletic program and its prestigious academics, it was the right fit.
“I got into UT (University of Texas) and Berkley (University of California at Berkley). Loyola had a nice package where I could play basketball and had good academics,” she said.
Mainguy plans to return to her home town, Houston, to work after graduation. She hasn’t had much time for job interviews, but plans to make that her top priority when the season ends.
Mainguy wants to be as involved with the team as much as possible after graduation, like Keily Schork A’08 is right now.
She also wants to make an effort to attend as many games as possible to support her teammates.
