The Recreational Sports Complex at Loyola closes earlier during the summer than during the school year.
On the weekdays, the center is open 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., but for the summer it will be closing an hour earlier. Currently on the weekends, the center is open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday.
Service area attendant and work-study employee at the Rec Plex Brad Vitou said the gym closes an hour earlier every day in the summer than during the school year. The pool always closes an hour earlier than the gym closes, so during the summer the pool will shut down an hour before the changed closing time.
Vitou, an economics senior, said the change in hours contributes to the fact that students will be going home for the summer and that there are about 500 people with memberships to the facility. He said not all will renew their membership and there won’t be enough people coming in to keep the gym open as long.
“The students who are commuters or local residents will probably continue to use the facilities, basketball courts and weight room,” Vitou said.
Marketing senior Robert Manson said that his basketball coach, Michael Giorlando, director and head coach of men’s basketball, will be teaching summer basketball camps over the summer for young kids.
Associate director of wellness for the Rec Plex Kristi Salvaggio said there will be a summer camp from June 14 to July 23 with 18 counselors and groups that Zach Bracey, assistant director of wellness, is in charge of.
Salvaggio, who is also in charge of fitness, lifeguards and aquatics, also said that Germayne Nash, associate director of the center, does the scheduling for all seasons.
“Our hours always change during the summer as well as when classes are not in session during the academic year,” Nash said. “The facility schedule is posted on our web site. During the summer months we host several camps including both athletic camps and our summer day camp for kids.”
“Yoga will not be offered in the summer and neither will the class Yoga Meets Dance,” Salvaggio said. She said these changes occur because there will be less people attending, however, the step class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays continues throughout the whole year.
Lots of the teachers for gym classes have a different schedule during the summer, also causing the change in this scheduling, Salvaggio said. At this point in the year, Salvaggio is unsure about whether or not the classes that are currently offered will be available at the same times, though she said the staff does try to keep the schedule as similar as possible.
