Glasgow, who played this Wednesday at the Bringing Back the Music event in the St. Charles room, is having a CD release party and performance tonight at 9 p.m. at One Eyed Jacks for the release of its second EP, “One of Me.” This release is far more experimental than the band’s first EP “Sterile.” They use more diverse instrumentation, and I am excited to hear them reproduce this live.
The EP opens with the exiting, whimsical and fast paced “Dirty Mouth: One of You.” This schizophrenic song grabs your attention and keeps it in a way that even our increasingly ADD culture couldn’t resist it. It opens with an energetic pulsing drumbeat accented by strings that give the song a mock-epic feel. Singer Sam Craft displays talent with an impressive and entertaining vocal line that jumps all over in a whimsical style.
The second movement of Dirty Mouth and the second track, “Dirty Mouth: Disgrace,” is a perfectly polar complement to its counter part. The second track possesses the same chaotic feeling, but with gracefully flowing harmonies, that build in excitement over the course of the track which seems to be one long chorus that brings closure to the spontaneous first track.
The third track, appropriately titled “Sea Shanty,” features harpsichord and trumpet in a renaissance feel, telling the story of a washed up pirate. This track features the lyrics “I’m a butcher/in a vegan town/invited to dinner.” It is a memorable sing along that concludes with the line: “On an ocean of insanity/I’m sailing forever/I’m not coming back.”
The stand out track on the album that will really give you goosebumps is the fourth titled “Comfortable.” It starts out delicately with guitar and subtle bass. Craft sings with emotion about an adulterous relationship. The title of the song manifests itself in the line from the second verse: “All I want to be is comfortable/with how you live without me.” This is a powerful song with good use of lyrics, energy and auxiliary strings that is not to be missed.
“Up in Flames,” the fifth track, is an equally powerful track that focuses on the singer’s frustration with the Church. Unique, catchy guitar riffs and passionate lyrics make for another fun ride. The EP is seven tracks in total. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes music.
