Students clustered outside of university buildings this afternoon due to a Loyola power outage that has been resolved, which disrupted class schedules and shut down the campus internet.
“A lot of people were outside when [the power outage] happened, so it just felt like a big gathering of confusion.” Schweikarth said. “It was chaotic.”
The power went out at least from Freret to Jefferson and impacted other schools, including the Willow School and Tulane, according to Entergy’s power outage map.
The main stairwell of the communications building was blocked off, and students were forced to evacuate the building during class, popular and commercial music junior Lyle Hutchins said.
“Each floor, the sliding doors are all closed. You can’t get to the first, second, or third floor,” Hutchins said while waiting in the Palm Court. “I feel like the power’s gone out before, and it hasn’t happened, so that’s why I’m a bit confused.”
Sophomore english student Max Schweikarth said the Loyola power outage happened while she was in her dorm. She said she was concerned about the possible difficulties for students with visual impairments.
“When we walked outside the dorm, only like three of the lights were working. It looked like ‘The Shining,'” Schweikarth said. “We went down the stairs – still no lights. I was like ‘Oof, if anyone has any visual impairments, this is not gonna be very good for them.”
Some motion design students lost hours of progress on project files while working in Monroe when the power went out, according to Gericke. The Loyola power outage also impacted the air conditioning in class buildings, Schweikarth said.
