Tranese and Trenell Smith, the Lady Wolfpack’s star twin set in the back-court, continued to play well this past weekend in the Freed-Hardeman Lionbacker Classic in Henderson, Tenn.
Unfortunately, Loyola proved unable to secure a win in both their tries.
The hosts No.7 Freed-Hardeman overpowered them 96-64 and to end their tournament participation prematurely and No. 13 Cumberland barely escaped Loyola 57-55 in the opener.
With Loyola missing All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference guard Dani Holland, Free-Hardeman saw five of its players hit double figures, their top scorer Ashley Helton responsible for 21 of them on 70 percent shooting.
Tranese Smith topped Loyola’s scorers with 16 points while she tied her sister Trenell in rebounds with six.
Kiely Schork and Kim Rigg poured in 12 and 11 points respectively to round out Loyola’s scorers in double figures.
The loss left Coach DoBee Plaisance’s team winless at 0-3.
Against Cumberland, Loyola lost its star guard Holland to a knee injury sustained with five minutes left in regulation but held ace scorer Renee Williams to two points, something Plaisance called a “positive” drawn from the result.
Trenell Smith, who had 12 points, tied the game up with two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation.
Cumberland’s C’Kala Humes drew a shooting foul on the other end, however, and extended her team out of the Lady ‘Pack’s reach definitively at 57-55.
Kiely Schork led Loyola’s scorers with 15 points and Marley Milton had 10.
Loyola’s off until Nov. 12 when they face Troy University on the road.
