Loyola ended their five-game win streak against the University of Mobile on Tuesday with a 19-30, 22-30, 30-26, 30-32 loss. It was the ‘Pack’s first home game in almost two years.
Colleen McNerney, psychology junior, and Sarah Howard, communications sophomore, led the ‘Pack with 16 and 10 kills, respectively. At press time, Loyola is 7-2.
Tuesday’s match was nothing short of exciting. Loyola started rough, but they picked it up after a two game deficit.
“We were shaky in the beginning,” international business sophomore Keelyn Henderson said, “mainly because of nerves.”
Fellow freshman Errin Price, psychology freshman, agrees. “I was really nervous,” Price said of her first home game.
However, the ‘Pack held its own in the last two games, winning 30-26 and battling point for point at the end of the fourth, eventually losing 30-32. “We fought back,” coach Tommy Harold said. “It was an exciting match.”
The players recognized the support from Tuesday’s crowd. Mary Seals, general business sophomore, said, “It was a struggle at first, but the fans supported us.”
Considering it had been two years since Loyola had played in The Den, the team drew rabid support. “It’s good to see a bigger fan base,” Seals continued.
“It’s not just the numbers we want, but the voices as well,” Harold said.
The team is undeterred by the loss, as their record remains solid and continues to be its best ever at the start of a season.
Although the team remains confident, they continue to focus on what it will take them to win. “We’re doing really well, we just need to improve more,” Price said.
The ‘Pack is putting tremendous effort into becoming as strong as possible. “It’s a team effort,” Harold said. “Everyone has their role.
“We focus on improving more than the numbers,” Harold added. Maintaining a practical attitude will serve the team well. As Henderson said, “Sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way.”
