With the memories of Palestinian suicide bombings on Israel fresh in his mind, Ra’anan Gissin, Senior Advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, declared his dedication to the United States and its fight for freedom and democracy at a lecture at Tulane University on Wednesday.
“He (President Bush) stands and fights against terrorism and he fights for the free world,” Gissin said.
Although Gissin said Israel is not going to be involved with the potential upcoming war with the United States and Iraq, he has declared Israel’s intimacy with the United States and said they would be willing to give assistance if needed.
“We are not involved in the war; we don’t try to push it or postpone it. This will not serve any use to the United States. We don’t need to advise the president, he will know exactly what to do,” he said.
According to Gissin, the true message of Israel is peace and democracy and one of the goals of Israel is to provide a secure homeland for the Jewish people.
The conflict with the Israelis started in November of 1947 with the partitioning of Palestine and the creation of the Israeli State in 1948.
Since then Palestinians have fled to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, where they continue to fight for these territories.
Palestinian suicide bombing stems from the loss of the Palestinian territory and the belief in Jihad, or Holy War.
“We have buried over 751 people from these futile terrorist attacks,” said Gissin.
Israel retaliates with military action and curfews on the Palestinian people.
“We are determined to never lose that homeland again,” said Gissin.
According to Gissin, these terrorist attacks are bringing on the demise of the Palestinian people and they could be stopped by educating the Palestinians that suicide bombings are not a part of Islam and that the encouragement of it is hurting everyone.
“The element of suicide bombing is alien to Islam.
“This was a modern interpretation. These people call for a destruction of the world.”
Gissin also said they are willing to work on negotiations that would bring peace between them.
“We have a plan to jump start their economy. Our goal is to have national unity,” he said.
