Students who participated in the Late Night Regatta built their own boats out of cardboard and duct tape and raced them in the University Sports Complex pool.
RA’s Carissa Marston, Zoe Glick, Olia Friedrichs, Moises Perez and Katie O’Dowd planned and programmed Res Life’s Late Night, which took place on Friday, Oct. 26th.
Loyola Late Nights are organized “to provide activities for all Loyola students to participate in on campus on Friday and Saturday nights,” Katie O’Dowd said, and have been around for much longer than she has been a student at Loyola.
“Loyola Late Night provides alternative opportunities to alcohol-related activities on campus during the late night hours on the weekend,” the Office of Co-Curricular programs website said.
Residential Life, the Office of Co-Curricular and University Programming Board are the main hosts of Loyola Late Night because they have the most experience with on campus programming, Ron Palmer, Campus Activities Intern, said, and they have the audience that the programs are targeted to.
“Residential Life sets aside budgets to host late night events throughout the semester, also other organizations that host late night events can request funds from the Office of Co-Curricular programs,” Katie O’Dowd said.
The theme behind this Late Night was based off of another university which has an annual tradition of hosting a similar Regatta event.
“We had teams of three whose mission it was to build their boats with a set amount of supplies, they could build it however they wanted, and then raced it,” Zoe Glick, Biever RA, said.
Participants’ supplies included cardboard, duct tape, shower curtains and pool noodles. The RA’s participated as referees.
Prizes consisted of three $50 gift certificates for first place and three $25 gift certificates for second place to Jacques-Imo’s.
The Office of Co-Curricular is looking for people to host Late Nights for the spring semester. If you are interested in hosting a Loyola Late Night event, contact Courtney Williams, Assistant Director of Campus Activities at [email protected].
