Dear Editor,
Ever heard the urban legend that says that gum takes seven years to digest? Actually, gum is processed and digested at the same rate and in the same manner as the food you eat.
We all know there’s nothing more annoying than traveling on the designated pathways along campus and discovering you have a huge slobbery wad of Big Red stringing from your brand new kicks.
From the Communications/Music Complex, to the right side of the Danna Center, I counted 1,544 pieces of gum -some fresh, others old, with the imprints from various individuals’ shoes. Most were located near and around ashtrays and garbage cans. How long have these pieces been there? How many people ever notice these little round specks all around campus? Does it take someone stepping in a piece of gum to notice that it’s there?
You’ve all done it -attempted to throw your gum in the garbage, only to discover you’ve missed the can by about a foot. Peering to your right and then the left, to see if anyone noticed, you shrug and walk away.
So next time, don’t get stuck in a pickle. Preserve the beauty of our campus. It’s safe to swallow.
Sincerely,
Beth Halel music senior
