The article written about the Martin Luther King Week for Peace Convocation sends a negative sign to minorities on campus.
The length of the article shows that The Maroon takes very little interest in reporting the achievements of minorities and the events that the university sponsors in the consortium to honor the life of the late, great Martin Luther King Jr.
The event that the newspaper reported about was worth more than two very small paragraphs. I attended all the events sponsored by the committee, and all the events were very noteworthy.
As a minority student, I feel slighted that the newspaper did not do more to report about the work being done to “build a culture of peace” in our city, our state, our nation and our world. The Maroon needs to realize that it is easy for people to see the negative parts of minorities, but it should be just as easy for them to see the exemplary aspects of the same communities.
I call upon the editorial board to begin to highlight the achievements of minorities just as they highlighted the negative incidents that happened on campus.
