Women’s Issues Organization and Alpha Psi Omega, Loyola’s drama honor society, have received permission from the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president, to co-sponsor a presentation of “The Vagina Monologues” on Valentine’s Day at 6 p.m. in Nunemaker auditorium.
Last year, the Rev. William Byron, S.J., former interim president, cancelled the on-campus production, generating controversy over an already controversial play. This year has been a different experience for Women’s Issues Organization members, according to Parisa Memarian, English senior.
“We are really excited that we’re being given the opportunity to finally perform the play this year,” Memarian said. “The administration has been so cooperative.”
Schools across the nation will produce performances of “The Vagina Monologues” in collaboration with Valentine’s Day on or around Feb. 14. Eve Ensler, the creator of V-Day and “The Vagina Monologues,” supports anti-violence organizations worldwide through various campaigns.
Admission is $7, and the proceeds go to the V-Day campaign, which raises money and increases awareness of organizations that combat violence against women.
