Dear Editor,
President Bush needs to live up to his “mandate” and put forth a fiscally realistic if not a responsible budget. Thus far, he has failed to do so. The newly proposed budget is a taxpayer’s nightmare. According to The Concord Coalition – a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to balanced federal budgets and responsible fiscal policy – the proposal sent to the Congress “relies on budgetary gimmicks that understate likely expenses and overstate likely revenue.” It is apparent that the executive branch under Bush’s leadership is exacerbating the U.S. budget deficit, which is set to reach a record $427 billion in 2005. The legislative branch must not allow such irresponsible behavior to continue. Appropriate action is needed today to avoid long-term consequences in the future.
