Two resolutions to re-allocate more funds to academic journals from the lacrosse team’s allocated amount were denied at last Tuesday’s meeting. Sigma Tau Delta, which produces the academic journal “Reader’s Response,” and the Philosophy club’s academic journal were unsuccessful in their appeals for the funds necessary for the production of their respective publications.
This year allocations allotted all journals funding based on price quotes from Central Reproduction, which photocopies bound booklets rather than actually printing them. This means that academic journals with long traditions of using other printers to produce high quality paper products were unable to fund such ventures this year using solely allocated funds.
Representatives from the lacrosse team were present at the meeting and, in an unusual move, showed support for the re-allocation. Recognizing that Loyola has a community of clubs that ideally work together to create the university rather than merely competitors for dollars, representatives from the lacrosse team indicated they would not fight re-allocation.
Nevertheless, after a two-hour session, the resolutions, as well as compromises, were denied. While on paper this decision is equitable to all Loyola organizations, some congress members and observers expressed the opinion that it was a rather unsympathetic move.
