SGA elections are right around the corner. Upon hearing the news, I thought it only proper as a former Humanities and Natural Science senator and member of the student body to share my opinion on what SGA does for the school and what I personally look for when voting.
The mission statement on the SGA site basically says that they are here to represent the needs of the student body. As the student body, we need to find the person best able to represent those needs. But how do we find that person?
First, do your research; a reputable name is usually a good candidate, so ask around. As with any democratic process, it’s good to get in the habit of researching your candidates. If your candidate of choice already has a good track record of being active around campus as well as being dependable, they most likely are a good candidate.
I hate to say that an unknown candidate does not have the possibility of being just as great for that job, but when someone has already worked hard to show that they can get thing done, then they are most likely to get things done.
Talk to the candidates. If they are running for office they should be more than happy to personally answer your questions and address your concerns.
So on election day, come to the polls with your research and hopefully a better understanding of SGA and which candidate will work for you.
