Snowball stands are about as common in New Orleans as it gets. Known most elsewhere as snow cones, these delightfully simple summertime treats consist of shaved ice, flavored syrup and, depending on your tastes, sweetened, condensed milk. Standing out among their numerous competitors is Plum Street Snowball and the “Favorite Snowball”. Located within walking distance of Loyola, the small corner shop usually has a line out the door. Established in 1945, Plum Street has more than 60 flavors on their menu, including some
favorites like cherry, spearmint and nectar. According to biology senior Rebecca Connick, it’s the clever serving vessels that set this stand apart. “I mean, come on,” she said. “They come in Chinese take-out boxes.”
