Ryan Ivie, a biological sciences/chemistry major, was awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Congress established the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater. The foundation looks to provide an ongoing source of highly qualified, engineers, mathematicians and scientists. This is done by awarding scholarships to college students that plan on pursuing careers in these fields. Sen. Goldwater served his country as a soldier and statesman for 56 years, which included his 30 years in the Senate. Ryan Ivie plans to conduct research to positively contribute to the understanding of human pathology by use of molecular biology and its tools.
320 sophomores and juniors from the United States were awarded the 2005-06 scholarships. These recipients were chosen from a field of 1,091 science, engineering and mathematics majors. The students were chosen based on academic merit and nomination by faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
The scholarship will pay a maximum of $7,500 per year. The scholarship can be used to cover tuition, fees, books and room and board.
