Loyola Athletics and Wellness kicks off the spring intramural semester on Tuesday, Feb. 1, with basketball, and on Sunday, Feb. 27, with softball.
By registering an account with imleagues.com, students can create or join a team, or become a free agent. Creating an account is free. The Louisiana Collegiate Intramural-Recreational Sports Association will be hosting an officials’ clinic from Jan. 22-23 at the Louisiana Technical College’s Ruston campus. The clinic will be held in order to train officials throughout the state in order to ensure that all campuses and IM programs are following the same protocol. All are welcome to attend the officials’ meeting. No prior experience is necessary.
On Tuesday, Jan. 25, there will be a mandatory captains’ meeting for all enrolled basketball teams at 6 p.m. in the sixth floor meeting room of the Sports Complex. There have been changes made to the spring season, so the meeting will present team captains with the opportunity to bring forth or resolve any discrepancies before the beginning of the season.
Each captain who attends must make sure their team is fully registered and signed up. If a team fails to meet the requirements by the roster deadline, that team will not be included in game scheduling. No other teams will be allowed to join or participate once the schedule is made. The softball captain’s meeting will take place Monday, Feb. 14 at 6:00 in the same location.
On Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 6:00 p.m., a local clinic, held by the Wellness staff, will be held so that any new or interested officials can receive official training and an introduction to basketball refereeing. Returning referees are encouraged to attend to reinforce their knowledge of the game and its rules.
According to Zachary Bracey, assistant director of wellness, the LCIRSA state tournament will held in late April at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Registration for the tournament and hotel fees will be paid in advance for the top-ranked basketball and softball teams.
The tournament is an opportunity to compete against other schools. The top team (in each sport) will have the first chance to participate, but because the tournament takes place during a hectic time of year in terms of finals, the highest ranked team will be given the option accept or pass the opportunity to the second-highest ranked team, who will also be given the opportunity to accept or pass the offer until one team on the roster accepts the invitation.
Also, the co-rec and women’s basketball leagues are in need of teams for this season. Anyone who is part of a student organization, fraternity or sorority and is interested in signing up a male/female team should visit www.imleagues.com and create or join a team.
“The women’s teams have been pretty much nonexistent the last two semesters, unfortunately, and co-rec goes in line with that. Student organizations have always been a big part of intramurals in the past. Getting them back on board would be a huge asset to the program,” Bracey said
