Social Justice University has faith in its students. Rather than jumping on the mandatory community service bandwagon, Loyola has chosen to treat its students like the adults that we attempt to be and leave the option of service in our hands.
As always, the university is encouraging student participation in the community but, unlike our neighbor to the west, will not require service hours as a part of enrollment.
There is a necessity for community service from all New Orleans residents, and there will be for quite some time. Instead of forcing students to begrudgingly help rebuild our grief-stricken city, Loyola is providing extra opportunities for those who truly want to make a difference in our community.
Habitat for Humanity is something Loyola sponsors every Saturday, and though the university is not demanding service from its students, there were still be dozens of willing participants turned away for lack of space last weekend.
People want to help. People want to bring life and love back to our city. And we, the determined students that we are, will make this happen whether the service efforts are required or suggested.
