While “The Heartbreak Kid” may not linger in the minds of Ben Stiller fans as one of his greatest works, it remains a thoroughly entertaining and delightful romantic comedy that will leave you laughing and satisifed.
Although I could easily criticize the plot for its lack of plausibility and progression, the film still exhibits a refreshing level of comic timing and adorable characters.
The film begins with Eddie (Stiller) as a 40-year-old single man attending his ex-fiancee’s wedding. His best friend (Rob Corddry) and father (real-life dad Jerry Stiller) comically convince him of his pathetic loneliness.
However, Eddie meets Lila (Malin Akerman), with whom he falls desperately in love. In an almost horrific leap of desperation for companionship, he agrees to marry her after only six weeks of dating. But as one of several twists in the plot, Eddie soon realizes on their honeymoon that he has absolutely nothing in common with Lila and that she makes him miserable.
Ironically enough, on his own honeymoon, Eddie meets Miranda (Michelle Monaghan) and quickly falls in love. But there is only one problem: he is married to Lila. The rest of the movie portrays Eddie’s incessant and heartwarming quest for love and companionship through his poorly timed dealings with women.
Although the movie was generally entertaining, it lacked much of the luster usually associated with Stiller films. It did not have the intricate wittiness of “Meet the Parents” or even the satirical mirth of “Zoolander.” But this movie does have a few great things going for it: outrageous jokes, comedic situations and a star-studded cast of acting veterans.
Overall, “The Heartbreak Kid” is worthwhile, and it is easy to overlook the improbable plot and poor sequencing because of its sheer amount of comic value.
