Bread for the World is a 30-year-old nationwide non-partisan Christian citizens movement who lobby Congress on legislation addressing hunger and development on their mission to end hunger.
Soon, the organization will be taking their national battle against hunger down to a local level.
The New Orleans Chapter of the BFW Institute is sponsoring their 23rd Annual Walk for the Hungry on Saturday Mar. 6.
Participants help raise funds for the non-profit organization to use on
their campaigns to end world hunger by collecting pledges from sponsors who can be anyone from friends and relatives to local businesses, clubs and organizations.
The chapter will collect non-perishable food items at the event to be donated to Second Harvesters Food Bank.
The organization consists of over 45 different denominations and is a collection of many local groups organized by Congressional districts.
Members help the hungry in their own communities and write their Congressperson for additional support.
According to the BFW New Orleans website, the organization attempts to reach the BFW goals by educating people about the causes and solutions to poverty and hunger, networking with churches, schools and community organizations to develop community responses to issues, and advocating for legislation at the local, state and national levels that will benefit poor and hungry people.
BFW hosts this annual Walk for the Hungry because they believe that everyone has a right to food as stated in article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Right. “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself, and of one’s family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care …”
The 4.8-mile walk begins at 9 a.m. and starts at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 4640 Canal St. The walk ends at 11:30 a.m. at the same location.
Pledge sheets are available at the LUCAP office in the basement of the Danna Center during regular business hours.
A registration fee is required and helps raise funds and provides T-shirts for those involved.
The fee is $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $7 for children under ten years of age.
People can register before Saturday by contacting Sister Helen Ojario by phone at 861-5834 or by e-mail at [email protected].
Walkers can also get friends, family, and classmates to sponsor them.
