A local woman filed a civil lawsuit last week against Loyola University claiming negligence after she tripped and fell on campus in September of last year.
Sonja Dedais alleges that she tripped and fell over a bulge in the carpeting of room 202 of the Broadway Activities Center on the law school campus on Sept. 9, 2011, after attending an Alliance for Good Government event.
She was taken to the hospital after the accident. According to her doctors, she has suffered injuries to her lumbar spine, left hip and left knee and sustained internal injuries.
In her statement of damages, she claims the loss of a fetus. The lawsuit states that she is being treated for “a dead fibroid tumor and/or dead fetus tissue from injuries she sustained in the fall.” Dedais is currently in the hospital, and her attorney has declined to comment.
Dedais’ suit accuses Loyola of negligence because she says employees did not maintain the facility or repair damage. The suit says Loyola created the defect in the carpeting and did not properly warn pedestrians or move to repair the carpet.
Dedais has stated her damages in the excess of $50,000 and reserves the right to increase them as the full extent of her injuries remains unknown. Some of the damages she states include medical expenses and treatment, disability, pain and suffering and mental anguish.
The suit was filled in civil court on April 25. Loyola University spokeswoman Meredith Hartley said that Loyola does not comment on pending litigation.
