An obscene caller, posing as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, has contacted at least one Loyola student, and possibly more in recent weeks.
The caller, who refers to himself as “Jimmy”, claims that he is a member of the fraternity and that he is doing a survey and testing out a possible pledge activity to see if it would work.
One of the victims, who does not wish to be named for safety reasons, claims that she has been contacted by the caller repeatedly since mid-October and that the man’s comments have been obscene.
“At first, I thought it was a friend of mine playing a trick on me,” she said, “so I played along. He was really strange, but not threatening.”
However, when she told some of her friends in Sip Ep that she was receiving calls, the victim learned that no one in the fraternity had heard of a survey being conducted.
The last contact the victim had with the caller was on Tuesday. She claims that she has told the caller in the past to quit contacting her, but he continues to call.
“I always thought it was just a big joke,” she said, “but now I’m not so sure. It’s a scary situation.”
When he heard about the phone calls from a member of Sig Ep, political science junior and Interfraternity Council President Fernando Bautista decided to send out a campus e-mail informing the student body of what was going on.
“I can assure you that none of the Fraternities are making phone calls, or sending emails requesting you to disclose any kind personal information,” Bautista wrote in an e-mail. He also urged that anyone receiving obscene calls or e-mails report them to University Police and IFC.
Bautista said he is not worried, though, that the calls will become a problem throughout campus.
“As of now,” stated Bautista, “hopefully it’s not a big deal. I haven’t really received any notification from the University about it.”
