In response to the article Alternative Agenda: have fun on your hurrication
written on Thursday , September 18:
Having read this article, I must commend the intent of the author to try to redirect students’ attention somewhat from an obviously terrible event, like hurricanes. The first time I saw a friend post on their status on another popular Web site “headed to Houston for a hurrication,” I laughed. Then cried and laughed some more. Sort of what you do when you go through a devastating hurricane experience.
That said, I would like to commend the commentators for this article. I graduated with a sociology/psychology degree and love when students use a humanistic perspective to view reality.
This topic all together is a gray area, depending on the individual’s circumstance. Everyone has something to lose in hurricane situations.
If a student from New Orleans read this article, the response might be different because, as it was previously mentioned, all could be lost forever. Although, this is a chance someone takes living in area prone to hurricanes. I know because I, too, live in a city prone to dangerous hurricanes.
No matter the circumstance, everyone is entitled to grieve their situation, which may include clubbing, drinking, crying, laughing, driving for 16 or more hours or anything else.
Because of this and the obvious fact that no one wants a hurricane, I personally believe the writer did a good job giving students a breath of fresh air, and the commentators brought the rest of us readers back to the dreary reality we need to face.
