Management junior Joshua Borges made Loyola athletic history Sunday afternoon by becoming the school’s single season home run record holder with his 12th and 13th shots of the season. This accomplishment came in the Wolfpack’s doubleheader sweep over the LSU-Alexandria Generals.
“It’s good to get it out of the way, once you get to 11(home runs),” Borges said. “It’s something that’s in the back of your mind.” He extended some of the credit to his coach, Gerald Cassard, and teammates. “Their support really makes the little things easy so I can focus on playing the way I know I can,” Borges said.
Now that this accomplishment is out of the way the cleanup hitter turns his attention to more extensive goals. “It might seem far-fetched, but my goal is to continue playing baseball. If I continue to put up the numbers that I have been putting up, I think I’ll have a fair shot.”
So far this season the power hitting third basemen has 14 doubles, has a batting average of .420 and leads the team with 13 home runs and 61 runs batted in. His career average currently stands at .372.
“It feels good (to break the record). I’ve worked so hard to be where I’m at now,” Borges said. Next week the Wolfpack will move into the postseason entering the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament where the action will begin April 30.
