As the hardships of everyday life beat down upon us, it becomes more and more important to find a way to escape. With every BOLO that arrives in our inbox, every paper we are assigned, every parking ticket we receive and every unexcused absence we take over the allotted number, we are reminded that life is hard.
And to make matters worse, “Project Runway” is over. The world is a cruel place.
Different people have different ways of dealing with life when it hands you lemons. Making lemonade is easier said than done. And lets face it, if all you’re handed is lemons and no sugar, the lemonade would be bitter anyway.
How about taking a little escape instead? A brief excursion into a world where the living is easy, the weather is sunny and everything is set to a mood-specific soundtrack: the wonderful world of MTV’s “The Hills.”
“The Hills,” above all, proves that dreams can come true. Take the show’s main characters, for example: Before September 2004, no one knew who Lauren Conrad was. But MTV knew she had potential. MTV knew that with enough clever marketing, some hip clothes and a whole lot of drama, one day, we the American public would not only know Lauren Conrad … we would care enough about her to closely follow the lives of her and her friends.
And here we are, four years later, still caring. Lauren Conrad is the embodiment of the American Dream.
She proves that you don’t need to adhere to attendance policies to succeed – after all, as we enter into the fourth season of “The Hills,” we’ve only seen Lauren attend class, oh say, three or four times? It doesn’t slow her down, though. Not only does she have an internship at Teen Vogue, she also has her own clothing line.
The crimes that exist in the world of “The Hills” don’t involve AK-47s and carjackings. For Lauren and company, the only theft going on involves boyfriends and best friends. And when double-crossed, Lauren doesn’t let it slow her down. She forgives – and forgets.
But life isn’t always perfect in “The Hills.” When Lauren accidently ruined her couture ball gown by placing it too close to her curling iron, it reminded us that in the end, she’s only human.
And when life really gets you down and it seems like nothing is going your way, take comfort in the fact that at least you’re not dating Justin Bobby.
Or worse yet, you could be Heidi. Between bad plastic surgery, a complete abandonment by all of her friends and the fact that she actually has to hang out with Spencer Pratt, Heidi shows us that things really could be much worse.
