Knoth refuses to grant archbishop’s request for names of LU Catholic faculty members

New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes recently requested a list of Catholic faculty at Loyola, but the Rev. Bernard Knoth, S.J., university president, refused to grant the request, Knoth said.Faculty members asked about the request at the faculty and staff convocation Jan. 11. Knoth said the archbishop asked him for a list of the names of Catholic faculty at Loyola, but Knoth instead referred him to information about instructors listed on the Loyola Web site, which Knoth called “public documents.” “The archbishop knows he’s putting himself in a terrible position if he releases the information. He’s in very navigable territory,” Knoth said.Bishops and archbishops across the country have taken different approaches to dealing with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, adopted by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on Nov. 17, 1999, which requires that professors who teach Catholic theology or doctrine receive a mandate from their local bishop, Knoth said.Advocates say Ex Corde is an effort to try to maintain some semblance of Catholic identity on campuses that choose to call themselves Catholic. Critics fear the document is part of a potentially dangerous move that will limit academic freedom.”In the end, the ‘mandate’ is about a relationship between the professor and the Catholic Church in the person of the local bishop. That relationship may involve discussions or matters to which I have no right or desire to be privy. Handling the ‘mandate’ in this way, where it is kept within the bounds of the relationship between the professor and the local bishop, is very positive in my opinion,” Knoth said.Archbishop Hughes was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
