Criminal justice freshman Christopher Gregory is on life support at Tulane Medical Center after suffering what doctors believe is a brain aneurism. Gregory was taken to the hospital after he collapsed at a friend’s house on Monday, according to a timeline released by Kurt Bindewald, dean of University Ministry.
An aneurism is an abnormal blood-filled bulge of a blood vessel, especially an artery, resulting from the weakening of the vessel wall, according to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.
Since his admittance to the hospital, Gregory has undergone several medical treatments.
He is surrounded by friends and his family, parents Grace and Eric, and brother Colin. Colin Gregory is a history junior and BEGGAR at Loyola. Christopher is a pledge in the same fraternity. The family is waiting for Chris’ other brother, John, to join them later this evening. Once the family is together, hospital doctors are expected to perform a test confirming that Gregory is clinically brain-dead, according to the timeline.
A mass will be held at 9 p.m. in Ignatius Chapel, “to celebrate the gift of Chris’ life with us,” according to a campus-wide e-mail from the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., university president. In his e-mail message, Wildes said members from the University Ministry Counseling Center, university chaplains and Student Affairs professionals will be available this evening and in the coming days. Wildes also said Manresa Den and Ignatius Chapel will be open to people who need a quiet space.
Bindewald said a memorial service will be held for Gregory but a date has not been set at this time. The timing of the memorial will depend on what arrangements the family makes. Bindewald said the university will have more details on this in coming days.
A Facebook group has been created for Gregory called “Get better soon Chris Gregory.”
The Maroon will have more updates on this story as information becomes available.
