The New Orleans Police Department will no longer enforce immigration policy without a warrant or a court order.
In a statement, NOPD said this plan stems from a “no bias immigration policy” that the NOPD is undertaking to improve relationships with immigrant communities.
“Unless there is a direct threat to public safety, officers will no longer engage in the enforcement of federal immigration policy without a warrant or court order. This new measure ensures that undocumented immigrants can interact with the local police force without fear of deportation.”
The NOPD is also hiring more Spanish and Vietnamese speaking officers to help with this policy.
