The Wolf Pack women’s tennis team had a successful tournament at the championship for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with both teams winning their matches.
For one of the first times in Loyola tennis history, there were multiple qualifiers for the tournament this year, said Head Coach Matt Llewellyn.
“Considering only two seasons ago we had our first qualifier in school history play this event, having two teams qualify was a huge success. To show up with four women who proved they can play with anyone in the country showed our progress and trajectory as a program on the rise,” Llewellyn said.
The Wolf Pack had two doubles teams at the ITA cup.
Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez went 2-1 at the tournament, winning against Union College in straight sets with scores of 7-5 and 6-3, according to Wolf Pack Athletics.
Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salguerio-Estala went 1-2 losing a tiebreaker and winning two other matches with scores of 6-4 and 10-7, according to Wolf Pack Athletics.
The tennis department is incredibly proud of the team, according to Llewellyn, and eager to send more players to tournaments.
“All four women came to this event wanting to compete and fight for every match. It’s a testament to their character and drive. They will share this experience with our team and continue to push our program forward,” Llewellyn said.
As for predictions for the rest of the season, Llewelyn said he believes that the program “can continue to make history in (its) upcoming season. To achieve what I know we can, we will need to keep maturing, keep focusing on our team, and keep building our culture of believing in ourselves and playing for each other.”
