Business senior Jared Belmonte is a right-handed pitcher for Loyola’s baseball team. In the graphic, Belmonte demonstrates the anatomy of a baseball pitch. In the wake of the start of baseball season, we sat down with Belmonte to find out more about him and his experience in baseball.

Q: What made you interested in becoming a pitcher rather than other baseball positions?

A: I started playing when I was little, and my brother was a pitcher. So I always wanted to be like him and he could teach me things.

Q: What is the most challenging part of being a pitcher?

A: Keeping hitters off balance, mixing up your pitches, and then being able to throw out your pitches for strikes.

Q: Do you have any rituals or superstitions that you do?

A: Not really. If I’m pitching on a day, I don’t like to step on the foul line. I never step on the line, because it’s bad luck for some reason. I don’t like to talk a whole lot when I’m about to be pitching. Just a mind set.

Q: How do you think the baseball season is going so far?

A: We’re going in the right direction and the program is definitely building. We can still make the conference tournament, and that’s our goal.
