The Lambda Law Alliance is on the move-literally. On Sunday, Sept. 23, the group will be participating in the NO/AIDS walk.

The Lambda Law Alliance is a student organization within Loyola’s law school that is dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment for all students regardless of their sexual orientation, gender or any other aspect of their sexual identity.

The organization was started by a graduate from the law school last year, A’12 Dr. Michelle Garcia, who actually received an award from the LGBT Bar Association for initiating the group.

The walk is being held by the NO/AIDS Task Force, a local New Orleans organization dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS as well as providing services to people affected by it. It will be a 3.2 mile walk on a route that starts and ends in Audubon Park. The walk has gained sponsorship from various local and national organizations like Chevron and the Times-Picayune.

“We have been trying to get involved with NO/AIDS Task Force here in New Orleans for a couple of years now, and this seemed like a great way to get to know some of the people involved in the local LGBTQ community,” says law senior Jennifer Webre.

The participation of the Lambda Law Alliance is in part motivated by NO/AIDS consolidating AIDSLaw of Louisiana. AIDSLaw is an non- profit organization that provides free legal help to people affected by HIV or AIDS, dealing with issues such as estate planning, discrimination and insurance.

“Lambda Law Alliance strives to assist the local LGBTQ community in any way, but especially in ways that are specific to our status as law students,” says Webre.
