Having only seen a small part of “The Vagina Monologues,” I was slow to criticize the decision of Father Byron. Perhaps he knows better than us; perhaps the content is not appropriate for Loyola. However, after reading “The Maroon” last week, I fear that Loyola has missed out on a great educational opportunity. There was a quote in the paper from Father Byron that women who dress inappropriately invite and encourage dangerous situations. I’m sorry, father, but that is simply not true. Rape and sexual crimes very rarely have anything to do with the way a woman is dressed. They are about power, control, and dominance. I am disappointed because in this day and age, and at a place of higher education, this should be common knowledge, but it obviously is not. We had a chance not only to educate ourselves, which Father Byron has shown us we still need, but to raise money for women in need. Yet we have turned it away. An educational, enjoyable, and empowering fundraiser. Thank goodness we didn’t get involved in that, right, Father Byron?
