I am writing to inform everyone about the night I almost died in the parking garage in hopes that I might be able to save lives by telling my tale.
It is about 7pm and I am driving through the parking garage coming from the St. Charles Avenue entrance. My sister is in the passenger seat as I am returning her to her dormitory room in Buddig. I notice someone standing in the shadows dressed in black and pointing a gun directly at us.
My first instinct was to slam on the brakes, pop it into reverse and floor the gas. In doing this, I almost crashed into two cars that were driving behind me. So again, I had to slam on the brakes. I look forward to see the man in black stepping out of the shadows towards us with his gun still aimed point blank at my sister and me. I start screaming out of my window for the cars behind me to move. Now there was no way I was going to die because the people behind me think that I am crazy trying to drive in reverse. Why would anyone ever use that gear of their car anyways?
With no other options, I shift into drive and I am now about to floor the gas and attempt to run this gunman over with my car. My sister is screaming the whole while because she too believes we are going to die tonight. I hit the gas and I am driving right toward the man in black when, out of fear I presume, he steps out of the shadows completely revealing that he is a Loyola University Police Officer holding a radar gun.
After noticing who and what was actually pointing at us, I again slam on the brakes and start hyperventilating.
Is this what UP is looking for? Is this truly what they are trying to do to the students of this University? This thirty thousand dollar a year University is outright threatening the lives of the students by posting these “police officers” in the shadows and telling them to point guns at us. This is absolutely insane not to mention the fact that it is completely illogical. I mean seriously think about it. A “police officer” is standing at one end of the garage. You are speeding. He clocks your speed and puts his hand up so that you stop your car. You are now busted. But wait, the “police officer” has no vehicle. So when the “police officer” steps around to your driver side window, you peel out and leave him in the dust. He can do nothing. Zero. Zip. Zilch. He is far too slow to run after you and he is definitely too slow to write down your license number before you are out of view. The logistics of having stand alone “police officers” handing out speeding tickets in a school parking garage are completely irrational and idiotic.
By the way, my car doesn’t even have five miles per hour (which is the posted speed limit in the garage) listed on the speedometer and I doubt there are many cars out there that do. So not only can I even attempt to gauge when my car is driving five miles per hour but I don’t even have to stop when these pseudo cops try to give me a ticket because they can’t chase me.
A note to the university: Please stop wasting our tuition money on “rent-a-cops” that are only attempting to end our lives instead of protecting them and put our money to good use.
