Editorial: Perhaps this go-round N.O. will get it right

Remember last year when the Saints threatened to leave New Orleans? The team wanted a new stadium, and the city was not willing to build one.The same situation came about in Charlotte this year, but that city can’t feel as lucky as the Big Easy. Taxpayers in Charlotte voted not to build a new stadium for its basketball team. In response, the Charlotte Hornets have been making arrangements to leave.Granted the Hornets had the lowest attendance in the NBA last year with 11,006 (the Charlotte Coliseum seats 19,925), but they will be missed by many.Like the Saints, the Hornets were not doing poorly when the move came about. At press time the team had moved to fourth place in the division, only six games behind Milwaukee.New Orleans in no way stole the Hornets from Charlotte, but the new Hornet fans should have the respect to back the team beyond the first two years it is here. The Hornets have numerous reasons to worry about the move to the bayou. New Orleans is ranked 43 in the United States in the television market — that will be a drop from Charlotte, which is ranked 27.Remember when New Orleans wanted a casino? Well, we got it. Three years have passed, and money is yet to be made by Harrah’s. How long will it take before the craze of a new basketball team is over?New Orleans beat out Louisville, Ky, Norfolk, Va, and St. Louis to get the Hornets. Let’s treat them well for years to come.
