    Women struggle against tough competition

Melissa St. Mary, management junior, led the Pack with 22 points and the Wolfpack scored 38 second half points, but it was not enough to beat Talladega in The Den last Thursday. The ‘Pack was outscored 24-14 in the first half of the 58-52 loss. St. Mary improved her scoring average to 12.8 points per game.Carlee White, political science sophomore, had 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Loyola, increasing her average points- per-game to 12.2 and her rebounds to just under 6; Katherine McNair, religious studies senior, added 11 for the ‘Pack.Ontoya Fowler and Rachelle Guyton each had 11 points for Talladega (9-6, 2-3). Donika Williams added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Talladega .On Tuesday, Aretha Taylor had a game-high 23 points, and Shan Collier had 11 for visiting Tougaloo as the Bulldogs defeated Loyola (3-16, 0-4), 75-58.St. Mary led the ‘Pack with 16 points. Other high scorers for the ‘Pack were Stacia Jackson, communications freshman, with 14 points and communications junior Jill Tucker with 11 points.Shooting problems plagued the ‘Pack at many points during the game. “We’re just inconsistent,” she said head coach DoBee Plaisance. “They’re not bad shots; they’re just not going in. We put together one solid half each game, but we have to play two solid halves.”One problem the ‘Pack is facing is the strength of the competition. Now ranked in NAIA Women’s Basketball Ratings are conference foes #15 Xavier, #17 Dillard, and #21 Mobile. “Our schedule helps in that we play better in big games. We looked good against Dillard and at UNO,” said Plaisance.”In the UNO game we were only down 10 at halftime.”She also mentioned the strength of St. Mary, a transfer student, and Joelle Bordelon, biology freshman, a point guard ranked nationally in assists.”We have plenty of young potential diamonds in the rough,” she said.”The keys are shooting percentage, rebounds and getting to the free throw line.”
