After having been elected as College of Music and Fine Arts senator, Marlee Jensen, has recently been chosen as a senator at large for Student Government Association.

Jensen, performance sophomore, was nominated at the Aug. 31 senate meeting to replace Lindsey Martin, political science sophomore, who resigned from the position. Jensen was senator of the College of Music and Fine Arts since her first semester freshman year and maintained that position for over a year.

“Lindsey Martin resigned, and Marlee was immediately nominated by a member of the SGA. After that, everyone agreed pretty quickly that she would fulfill that position’s requirements,” said Shannon Donaldson, SGA director of public relations, Maroon design chief and mass communication sophomore.

Since Jensen entered Loyola, she said she has always shown high interest and commitment in SGA.

“I care a lot about how SGA and the administrative department of the school operate,” she said.

Michael Morin, SGA president and music education senior, said he believes Jensen is qualified for the position.

“As a senator for the College of Music and Fine Arts last academic year, she fulfilled the duties that we asked of her and has always been a delight to have as a member of the student government,” Morin said in an email. “I have faith that she will be a positive voice for the students of Loyola in her new role as senator at large.”

She said she is fairly enthusiastic about her plans and initiatives.

“I haven’t decided all of them yet, however, something that I want to concentrate on is the initiatives that have not taken place yet,” Jensen said. “Hopefully I can help to create more programs while putting my input in budget allocation and also strive to increase the level of public awareness about SGA. I’ve noticed not many know the full extent of the ways in which SGA could help,” she said.

For now, the position for College of Fine Arts senator remains open.

“We will put ads, and it’ll probably spread by word,” Donaldson said.

In the meantime, Jensen will fulfill her duties as one of the four senators at large.

“I am very excited for the appointment, and didn’t quite realize the whole extent of functions that a senator has under the belt,” Jensen said.

“One thing that I’m particularly excited about is that now I’m able to talk to other students outside campus and focus more on the interaction between senators and the student body.”
