Women’s basketball nears end of season

They say all good things must come to an end. And so it has gone the past two weeks for the Loyola women’s basketball team. After winning a season-best two of three in the first week of February -including a victory over rival Spring Hill – the ‘Pack lost its bite and dropped its next four games.”We’re working hard. We’re hanging around [in games],” said head coach Do Bee Plaisance. “It’s just the little things that are killing us right now.”Little things, Plaisance said, include turning the ball over and shooting it with inconsistency. Both these problems surfaced Feb. 9 against William Carey in the Den. Loyola could not overcome its 19 turnovers and 33 percent second-half shooting as it lost to the Crusaders, 63-51.Five days later, the ‘Pack played host to Xavier in a Valentine’s Day showdown. Loyola kept it close for much of the game. But the nationally ranked Gold Rush was not in a loving mood, as it capitalized on 22 ‘Pack turnovers and pulled away late en route to a 77-60 victory.Still, Plaisance hasn’t lost any love for her team. “We’re staying with these tough teams for a while, but it’s just a situation where we almost have mental lapses. But we’re learning; we’re growing,” she said. The ‘Pack was forced to go on the road for its next two games. The team showed definite signs of learning and growth against SUNO and Dillard, but the results remained the same. Despite only turning the ball over to SUNO 12 times on Saturday, Loyola fell, 72-57. Emerging star Carlee White, political science sophomore, notched a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to match the Lady Knight’s powerful interior game.”They just pounded us to death inside,” Plaisance said. “They’ve got some huge girls. Some of them are bigger than me.”Against Dillard, White led the ‘Pack in scoring again – but this time with only 16 points. Poor shooting plagued Loyola throughout the 76-57 loss to the Blue Devils. But it didn’t cost the team until the end.”Dillard was a two point game in the second half, and all of the sudden it seemed like we had a lid on our basket, and we couldn’t get a bucket for six minutes,” Plaisance said. The ‘Pack now stands at 5-23 (2-12 in conference) after the four consecutive losses. Still, Plaisance refuses to be discouraged. She said that is a reflection of her team. “With everything we’ve been through, it would be really easy for them to just give up,” she said. “But they don’t. They will fight till the end. They refuse to die.”
