New volleyball coach arrives

Angela Franke will be the newest addition to the Loyola Wolf Pack, as the volleyball head coach.

Last season, the Pack was lead by Margot Frederick, who only spent one year at Loyola. Before that, Tommy Harold lead the volleyball for ten solid years, and is now the head coach at Nicholls State University.

Franke has been in a head coaching position since 2009, and most recently was at Mississippi Valley State University where she spent two seasons as head coach.

Years prior, Franke came to New Orleans to volunteer for AmeriCorps. She said she has loved this city ever since.

“One of my goals was that if I ever got the opportunity to come back I definitely would do so. When this job posted, I figured I would try,” Franke said.

Director of Athletics and Wellness Michael Giorlando knew that Franke was the right choice for the new volleyball coach after looking at other potential candidates for the job.

“She impressed our search committee with her vision of the volleyball program, organization, and her emphasis on coaching student-athletes to develop the whole person. We look forward to her joining our team,” Giorlando said.

Franke has experience in Division 1 and Division 2 in the National Association Intecollegiate Athletics as well as at junior colleges when it comes to recruiting players. She thinks that she can provide a new level of recruitment to the Loyola volleyball program.

“I’m really diverse in what I look for in players and I go all over the country. I don’t have just one spot where I recruit from,” Franke said.

The new season starts in August, and Franke thinks if they keep their goals in mind, they will have great potential.

“I would like to see us be a 500 team at the end of the season. I would like us to be in the middle somewhere causing some upsets,” Franke said.

With eight players coming back, the volleyball team has a solid foundation to build on. Eva Allen, mass communication sophomore is excited to be gaining a new and enthusiastic coach that can help the team preform at a higher level.

“Our team is very excited to have a new coach and is ready to jump back into our training. I believe that you will be able to expect a lot of fight from our women’s volleyball team,” Allen said.
