OPINION: Gamer girls aren’t a rarity, only rarely acknowledged

In a generation where technology has become more and more prominent, there are all different kinds of people adding to the population that use technology, including gaming consoles and PCs.

In that population, according to statista.com, 49% of video gamers are female. If such a large population of gamers are female, then why aren’t they acknowledged? What makes it worse is that these gamers are the ones acknowledged for giving a bad name to the “real” gamers because they use their platform for sexual innuendos.

On top of that, they use the gender norm color of pink for everything to make sure it’s known that they’re a girl. Now, there are some female gamers out there changing the game with their skill and streamer count, but others are struggling to make a name because it’s so male dominated.

In a recent commercial for the chromebook, Michelle Rodriguez is seen acting as a female gamer on the set of The Walking Dead, but why did it take this long to see a female in a commercial about gaming? Games like Call of Duty and Fortnite are adding in female operators/characters to make women feel more welcomed, but it feels so forced and unnatural. You shouldn’t have to add characters like Nicki Minaj or Becky Lynch to make people feel included. The names aren’t necessary.

On top of that, the female people of color population is almost never acknowledged. Once again the only example in recent commercials is Michelle Rodriguez, known for her role as Letty in the Fast and Furious Franchise.

The solution is males acknowledging their female gaming counterparts more and gaming companies actually listening to female gamer’s opinions. It doesn’t have to be pink to be female. It also doesn’t have to be about sex to be female. I understand female gamers trying to gain an advantage by using sex to increase stream and follower count, but they aren’t using their new increased influence to put others on a pedestal.

Anyways, gamer girls are equal parts gamer and girl, give us the respect we deserve. Especially when our k/d is higher than the next dudes.
