(L-R): Carson Cruse, Juleea Berthelot, Diamond Dixon, and Rowan Sawyer stand in front of the Danna Center on March 7, 2024. The pairs are running respectively for president and vice president of SGA for the 2024-25 academic year.

There are two presidential and vice presidential candidates running in the year’s Student Government Association election to serve the student body until next spring – Berthelot-Cruse and Dixon-Sawyer.

Berthelot-Cruse

Psychology and sociology sophomore Juleea Berthelot is running for president with running mate economics junior and current SGA Senator-at-Large Carson Cruse.

Berthelot said she’s made it her goal to be as involved with student life as possible and along the way has found that there are so many unique groups across campus that are limited to limited acting players.

Congruently, Cruse said Loyola is a place he calls home and a community made up of some of the most talented, intelligent, and hard-working individuals he’s ever met.

Together, the two plan to “unify Loyola.” To them, this means building unity amongst these groups through support, aid, and real action, Berthelot said.

Their 3-pillar campaign is comprised of three main goals: defending diversity, community engagement, and accessibility.

Defend Diversity

Community Engagement

  • Flea market
  • Collaborating with artists to create SGA zine
  • Revamp SGA hub

Accessibility

“Together, we can create the Loyola we all deserve,” Berthelot said.

Dixon-Sawyer

International Business, finance, and accounting junior and current SGA director of finance Diamond Dixon is running for president alongside biology junior and current speaker of the Senate Rowan Sawyer.

Dixon said she’s been active in SGA and other organizations since the day she arrived at Loyola, and she aims to use her expertise, ambition, and passion to be an advocate for all Loyola students.

Similarly, Sawyer said she hopes to apply her experience, knowledge, and understanding to empower students the way SGA has empowered her throughout her time at Loyola.

Together, the duo hopes to create a “S.W.E.E.T.E.R.” Loyola, which stands for safety, wellness, economics, environment, transformative, empowerment, and relations.

On the menu for their idea of a sweeter Loyola includes:

Safety

  • Parking garage safety measures
  • Safety awareness mocktail mixer
  • Self-defense class
  • Campus pathway lighting

Wellness

  • Advocating for “wellness days”
  • Update Iggy’s Cupboard hygiene products
  • Drink spike testing kits
  • Balanced options in the Danna Center
  • SGA cooking class

Economics

  • Creating a student care and wellness fund
  • SGA budget revisions
  • Study abroad scholarship
  • Passport fund allocations
  • Greek new member grant

Environment

  • Recycling spaces at events
  • Continuation of UPB crawfish composting

Transformative

  • Purchase new Amazon lockers
  • Sponsorship for Iggy’s Cupboard
  • Advocate for Greek plots
  • Increase charging stations

Empowerment

Relations

  • Partnering with student organizations
  • Bridging the gap between students and upper administration

In the their campaign video, Sawyer said, “We, as students, have the ability to make Loyola sweeter.”

Voting begins on March 21 and goes until March 24. Students are invited to a townhall debate on March 21 in Monroe 152 at 6:15 p.m.
