It was a night of cheering, dancing, and bingo at Loyola with the university’s second annual drag show.
All semester, the Student Government Association’s equity and inclusion committee has been working on the event with returning queens Debbie with a D and Laveau Contrarie.
But unlike last year’s drag brunch, SGA’s chair of equity and inclusion Stephanie Oblena said she decided to change things up. To give more time for the queens to rest and be more interactive, Oblena and the equity and inclusion committee decided to host drag bingo.
This change, Oblena said, was a success.
“I’m really glad we could design the event to suit our drag queens needs and what our community wanted to see more of,” she said.
Oblena said the committee aimed for the event to help LGBTQ+ members on Loyola’s campus feel more included and seen.
Environmental science freshman Coco Zehm said this event made them feel that way.
Zehm said they believe events like these are important because they bring communities together.
This aspect of drag is what helped Debbie with a D get into the hobby.
While attending college, she attended her first drag show. She said this was a moment that made her feel accepted and included.
Now that she is in a place where she can be herself, Debbie with a D said she should pay forward and share that acceptance with others.
“Once you get to a place where you’re not afraid to kind of be vocal and be seen, I think it’s kind of your duty a little bit to be seen and let others know it’s okay,” she said.
