Brief: Mass communication students honored with journalism awards

The Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards recognized several members of The Maroon staff for this year’s honors. The awards are given out annually for exceptional work in the field of college journalism.

Computational math junior Precious Esie, mass communication junior Carl Harrison, mass communication sophomore Leslie Gamboni, and mass communication senior Jamie Futral were awarded first place for in-depth reporting in the nation on the Series on Sexuality. Mass communication senior Masako Hirsch won second place in the region for general news reporting. International business freshman Camara Thomas won third place in the region for sports writing. In addition to the individual awards, The Maroon won third place in the region for best all-around non-daily student newspaper.
