There’s often a line that trails out the door at Parkway Bakery & Tavern, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from entering this 100-year-old Mid City po’boy establishment. The original Parkway Bakery & Tavern opened up in 1911, and ever since the “poor boy” sandwich joined the menu in 1929, it’s been the shop’s specialty. The shop offers 25 different “poor boy” options including their signature “Parkway Surf and Turf” – a flavorful combination of slow-cooked roast beef and golden fried shrimp on fresh po’boy bread. This old New Orleans sandwich spot offers a full bar and still serves their Barq’s Root Beer in glass bottles, a nod to the generations that have come before.
