Editorial: Hernandez’s decision right on the money

In sports there are rules. Not just for the players, but rules for the coaches, too. And too often, coaches break the rules by making exceptions for the number one athlete on the team. After all, why would they want to hurt themselves? But not at Loyola. Jerry Hernandez, head coach of the men’s basketball team, stuck to his guns when his number one player broke the rules. He expelled Mack Doby, political science junior and last year’s Maroon Athlete of the Year, from the team. Doby, who was nationally ranked from the free throw line, crossed Hernandez’s line. That line included yelling at both Hernandez and the referees. But it really doesn’t really matter what Doby did or why he did it. What matters is that he did it on several occasions.Maybe he didn’t like the young freshmen, or maybe he didn’t like the new zone defense. It doesn’t matter because he broke the rules. Now what kind of coach kicks his best player off the team, especially during a tough season? A good coach does. A smart coach does. Making exceptions for “certain” players on a team is the first step to destroying that team. The crux of a good team is the team itself. It is not the star, but all the little flashlights that make up an even stronger glow.Is the coach happy about this? Is the team happy about this? No. There is no one who is happy about it, but it had to be done.
