(AP)–Sandra Bland’s family has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $1.9 million, according to CNN. Bland, a black woman, was found dead in a Texas jail three days after a confrontation with a white state trooper in 2015.
The settlement, CNN said, includes compensation for Bland’s death as well as several changes to jail procedures in Waller County, Texas. The Waller County Jail will pay the bulk of the settlement — $1.8 million — with TV station KTRK saying the Texas Department of Public Safety will pay $100,000, the highest amount allowed by state statutes.
Bland’s death was ruled a suicide, and her family contested the findings.
