Toni Jones, a lead organizer for New Orleans for Community Oversight of Police, was arrested today at a protest on Freret Street.
According to Carson Cruse, the president of Loyola’s Student’s for a Democratic Society, the protest was held to demand that Walter Isaacson resign his position on the Tulane Board of Trustees after he was accused of physically assaulting Tulane student Rory Macdonald at a panel on March 13.
According to Cruse, Tulane Police approached Macdonald at the protest to tell them that they are banned from entering Tulane’s campus for the remainder of the New Orleans Book Festival being held at the university.
Cruse said he believed police tried to grab Macdonald and force them onto campus.
According to Cruse, police told Macdonald this was so they could detain them.
Cruse said it was at this point that Jones put herself between Macdonald and the officer and asked them why they were trying to detain Macdonald.
According to Cruse, the officer told Jones not to touch them, and then Cruse said multiple police officers pulled Jones onto Tulane’s campus and arrested her.
Jones is being charged with battery, obstructing a public place, interfering with lawful investigation, resisting/obstructing an officer, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
