Plants hang in Monroe’s rooftop greenhouse on April 22, 2022. The environment program hosted events to celebrate Earth Week.

Make way, Loyola an anniversary is in the works! Loyola’s Azby Greenhouse, located on the roof of Monroe Hall, is celebrating 10 years since its opening later this year.

The Azby Greenhouse has provided an eco-friendly, sustainable space for students within environmental sciences and biology.

Courtesy of a donation by the Azby Fund, a non-profit community organization in Louisiana, the Azby Greenhouse provides a professional environment for the Biology and Environmental Studies departments on campus, for faculty and for their students.

A 3,000 square foot botanical space, the Azby Greenhouse provides a space for independent research and student projects. The greenhouse is an educational space for a multitude of students, whether through environmental research projects or as work-study students.

Azby Greenhouse is charged by Mark Tobler, the greenhouse coordinator. As a research associate and coordinator of Loyola’s Keep Loyola Beautiful affiliation, he assists the research and work-study students with their projects and assignments.

For any students outside of the Biology and Environmental Studies programs who wish to use the greenhouse, they must submit written approval to the greenhouse coordinator, Mark Tobler.

Whether working hand-in-hand with the operations of the greenhouse or simply appreciating the space from afar, the Azby Greenhouse continues to be a place of educational resources and growth.
