President Donald Trump suggested he might deploy troops in the city of New Orleans.
“We’re making a determination now: Do we go to Chicago, or do we go to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great governor — Jeff Landry — who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country that’s become quite, you know, quite tough, quite bad,” said President Trump on Wednesday in the Oval Office during a meeting with the president of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
“So we’re going to be going to maybe Louisiana, and you have New Orleans, which has a crime problem. We’ll straighten that out in about two weeks,” Trump said.
“We will take President Donald Trump’s help from New Orleans to Shreveport,” said Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry in a post on X.
Helena Moreno, New Orleans City Council member and candidate for mayor, also issued a statement.
“We have had an unprecedented reduction in crime and violence in New Orleans,” Moreno said. “This is an attack on certain cities. There are many cities with mayors aligned with this President whose crime issues are severe, but they are not targeted.”
State Senator and New Orleans mayoral candidate Royce Duplessis said in a statement, “President Trump’s suggestion that he may deploy federal troops to New Orleans is reckless, politically motivated, an abuse of presidential power, and a betrayal of our Constitution.”
